If board games are the happy utopia of mankind, then the most common game components, plastic components, are the “infrastructure maniacs” of this city. If you don’t believe me, look at it.

1. Worker chess pieces

The humblest existence on the table. They are usually round and flat. Players push them around casually, and occasionally they are accidentally injured and “fall off the table and die”. But don’t underestimate these “social animals”. In “Catan”, they transform into pioneers in the resource battle. In “Werewolf”, they are directly transformed into acting schools. They use plastic bodies to perform Oscar-level performances of “I am a civilian, I swear”.

2. Dice

The rebellious young boy’s six-sided dice is always in the rebellious period. The more the player needs 6 points, the more it rolls out 1. It makes people want to put it in the microwave to “correct its personality”. But “Dungeons and Dragons” players have already figured out the routine. Worship the GM before rolling the dice. After all, in the arena of plastic and probability, metaphysics is the hard truth.

3. Model Boss

The nobles among plastics: Space Marines from Warhammer and Zerg Queens from StarCraft. These plastic artworks are as fine as fingernails. When assembling, players become clumsy, but when they are put on the table, they instantly become full of aura. They are like luxury goods in the board game world, a bit expensive. But taking photos and posting them on WeChat Moments can get 99+ likes, which is worth it!

4. Accessories Group

The circular indicators of “tools” in board games are never-stopping overtime dogs, and are proficient in all kinds of things. Such as allocating resources and keeping scores. The strange-shaped plastic blocks in the expansion pack. They may be abstract art creations made by designers after getting drunk. But at critical moments, these “little transparent” can always save the day. For example, using plastic figures to plug loopholes in the game can called “502 glue in the board game world”.
Plastic components never compete for the C position, but they are resistant to falling and chewing. Don’t ask, just ask the pragmatic spirit that has bitten by dogs. It supports half of the board game world. Next time you play a board game, remember to say to your most common game components plastic component comrades: “Thank you for your hard work, you are half of the MVP of this game!”

Don’t underestimate this ordinary  punch board. It is a secret weapon for board game players! It is a common board game component. From “Call of Cthulhu” to “Star Trek”. As long as you want to DIY cards, make plot markers. Or make a “ventilation hole” in the rule book, it can make you a handicraft master in seconds. Although the finished product may look like it has gnawed by mice.

Historical origin

From the Roman Code to board game accessories, the ancient Romans used it to bind legal documents. As a result, they were fined because the holes were too crooked. Medieval monks used it to copy scriptures, and ended up poking the parchment into a sieve. Now, it has finally found the right way to open it. In the board game circle, crooked holes = “artistic style”. Falling paper scraps = “atmospheric special effects”. Don’t ask, just ask if you slip.
Modern application

Everything can be “perforated”

1. Deck expansion: Official expansion pack is too expensive? Printing paper + punch plate = money saving expert!
2. Plot Marking: Put a blood moon pattern on the Werewolf ID card, and the player will explode after seeing it.
3. Physical plug-in: Punch holes on the edge of the Monopoly map to make a “shortcut channel”. The landlord said he was an expert!
4. Players’ Complaints “Where is the precise positioning? The holes are more random than my life plan!” “Every time I use it, it looks like a crime scene, with paper flying everywhere. My mom thought I was learning papermaking.” “Before buying: DIY master! After buying: Ah, why can’t the holes be aligned…”
5. The Ultimate Secret: The Law of True Fragrance Although it always ridiculed as a “hand-clumsy savior”. But when you use the common board game component punching board to make exclusive game coins. Or add “confidential documents” holes to the script killing clue card. That crisp “click” instantly makes you dream back to the medieval blacksmith shop, and the sense of accomplishment is overwhelming! After all, in the world of board games, perfection is floating clouds. Personality is the truth!

This installment continues with the board game pieces that are commonly used by most game designers on the market.

1.Blank Stand-Up Player Pieces – For Game Designers that Want to Draw Your Own Characters

You might even use these cool blank stand-up pieces without drawing on them. The colored base on the bottom is great for telling the players when testing my prototypes. If you are into the art side of game design, you will have a better use for these designs. I don’t create a lot of games that involve player movement/tracking. But if I start working on a prototype like this, these would be helpful for that.

2.A Nice Set of Board Game Dice – Good Board Game Pieces

You will find it helpful to have a nice set of dice to prototype your game. Once, I had an idea for a new dice game a few years ago. I wanted to have players level up characters and get stronger as the game progressed. I used dice like this to “level up” characters. When a character increases his attack power, the dice are added or upgraded to the dice pool. For this purpose, it works very well. It is also similar to the dice set I used when I shot 3 game ideas in the 3 day challenge.

3.Game Timer – A Standard in the Board Game Industry for Keeping Time

Many party games use a game timer. However, if you want a variety of game timers, then you might like the variety of sand timers for board games. The timers come in varieties of 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, and 10 minutes

4.Play Money

Who doesn’t need a little money to complete your collection of board game prototypes. Many board game prototypes can get plenty of play out of a game. Once you have a set of games, all you’ll have to do is playtest to find the right balance of money your players need.

Last time we introduced some of the board game pieces that are the most used by board game designers. This time we continue.

1.Blank Playing Cards – First Time Game Designers Have Found These Very Useful

Create games with letters and pens. Upgrade your note cards to these blank playing cards. When you are just starting out, you may find these blank playing cards useful and fun. There is nothing wrong with using them, and they will be more fun when playing your card games. But again, these blank playing cards do a great job when you are just starting out, so feel free to use what helps you the most.

2.Blank RPG Tile Mat – Perfect Board Game Piece

I remember a work party where my friend brought her kids. While everyone else was drinking in the pool, we spent a lot of time learning how to make a board game using this map. We would take turns drawing on the mat with dry erase markers. The person who didn’t draw the mat created the character cards, which were represented by similar cheap plastic miniatures.

3.Blank Game Board

Short version – This board game makes a great kids art project. However, you can also use it to make a nice custom board game by printing the image at a local print shop. If you want to make your own custom board game, this might be what you need.
Long Version – This is also a great product for teaching kids how to make their own board games. You can use crayons, pens, or markers directly on the board. Or, you can get fancy with it and create the image. And print it at a local print shop.
The board is 18 in x 18 in x 9 in four 9’s folded. So you can print the 18 in x 18 in image and then cut it to fit 4x. Or, you can create four individual 9’s in x 9 in image and then glue them to the image. Most people use spray glue like this to glue the paper to the board if you decide to go that route.

4. Custom Blank Dice for Board Games

These blank dice board game pieces are great when you want to make your own custom dice. He then took the board game to a major gaming convention to test it out. We had a blast that weekend and it was exciting to show off his prototype.
Mike and I worked with my Sharpie to write on the blank circle labels and put together his blank dice. They look great and worked out great. It was a little time consuming because we had to cut a portion of the label off to make it fit on the die, but the end result made for a nice look.

Game pieces are physical representations of the game mechanics and dynamics that exist in a game. In board games, these are the physical pieces that players interact with throughout the game. They often have a variety of purposes, including: representing information; positions; and relationships in the game. It includes primary components, common components, identification components, randomization components, and measurement components. This article will focus on Measurement Board Game Pieces in board games.

What is Measurement Board Game Pieces?

Measurement Components often used to measure or judge the relationship between different states occurring in the game. These can be progress on a track; the scores of other players going up or down; or the time remaining in a real-time game. These measurement components can take many different shapes and applications, depending on their purpose in the game.
Sliders/Dials, Counters, Times are all Measurement Board Game Pieces.

Sliders: One of Measurement Board Game Pieces

Sliders and dials used to measure the relationship or state of a given object or resource state. Some games choose to use cubes, chits, or other objects (i.e. money) to represent the quantity of a given resource in the game. If these quantities change frequently, then sliders are often a better choice to represent this. Sorcerer’s City is a game that uses these sliders to track four different resources for the player during the game. Dials can also used to select a certain amount of information on the scale. Dice can used for this, up to certain values. However, if the player needs to select information to hide, the dial is a better choice. An example of this is in Scythe, where the amount of force used in a military operation needs to kept secret until it revealed to the opponent.

Counters: One of Measurement Board Game Pieces

Counters are another form of measurement game component. Game Counters are usually chits or cubes or meeples that can used for this specific purpose. Typically, one of the most common forms of counters in games is money, currency, or something more goal-oriented like victory points. Counters can also used to track different states of different components, like cards in Magic the Gathering. As such, they can used for many different purposes, like multi-purpose components.

Timers: One of Measurement Board Game Pieces

Timers are often a misunderstood component in board games. Many players may recognize sand timers from games like Codenames, but they often forget about other components that are both timers and tracks. Star Wars: Rebellion uses track as a timer to predict when the final action of the game will occur. Timers can also be considered for when a game resource runs out or a deck of cards runs out. Most designers and players often attribute timers to actual sand timer components in the game, though. They are best used when a certain amount of actual time needs to be measured.

Game pieces are physical representations of game mechanics and dynamics present in a game. In board games, these are the physical pieces that players interact with throughout the game. They often serve a variety of purposes, including: representing information; positions; and relationships in the game. It includes primary pieces, common pieces, identification pieces, randomization pieces, and measurement pieces. This article will focus on Probabilistic Board Game Pieces in board games.

What is Probabilistic Board Game Pieces?

Randomization pieces are used in games to provide random values; outcomes; or events. They are used in conjunction with other game mechanics and pieces to provide an atmosphere of external control that is beyond the grasp of the players. These elements are either used to provide some kind of random output or random input.
Dice and Spinner are both Probabilistic Board Game Pieces.

Dice: One of Probabilistic Board Game Pieces

Aside from playing cards, dice are one of the most ubiquitous randomization pieces in games. The standard D6 dice, with digits 1-6 represented by dots, is one of the most common icons in games. So much so that Perudo (Cheater’s Dice) is one of the many games played with just these dice. Dice come in many formats, configurations, and combinations. They are able to provide a wide variety of random inputs and outputs to players.

Spinner: One of Probabilistic Board Game Pieces

Spinners represent another form of randomization in games. Although spinners can provide more granular results than dice. They are also larger and more conspicuous than dice. The Game of Life is one of the most popular examples of spinners; although one of my favorite games, Montana, also recruits spinners by providing players with random types of workers.
