A complete guide to all the components and other elements you might want to include in a classic board game, and how they make the game fun.
When you start looking into how to make your own board game, one of the first things that usually hits you is how many different pieces and parts there are, from dice and cards to counters, coins, miniatures, and more. In other words, it’s not just the board! As you develop your ideas and themes and choose your mechanics. Take into account how many options there are to consider. You need to ask yourself: “What should a board game include?”

1.A gaming board

If we’re talking about board games, and we are! then it seems logical to start with the concept of a game board, right? However, even though the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, there is a subtle difference between tabletop games and classic board game. Strictly speaking, you don’t need a board for a tabletop game. Just a tabletop. So, card games, pen-and-paper games, and many puzzle games are tabletop games. And not board games. Board games must have some kind of board. You might say that board games are part of tabletop games. Because the board is almost always placed on a tabletop. Although they are also often played on the floor.

(1) Common Game Board Varieties

The traditional and most common board for games is a printed card square or rectangle, which may or may not fold. For example, consider popular family games such as Clue or Monopoly. In most cases, the board is located in the middle of the playing area. And there are directional players sitting there, while there can also be more than one player on each side. So, two players on each side. The traditional four-square board can accommodate up to eight players. Other types of game boards include modular sections. These sections fit together (a bit like a puzzle). To form the playing area. In several games (especially the role-playing variety). These sections are placed one by one on the table as the game progresses. As each game is played, the configuration may change.

(2) Special Game Board Configurations

Also, the board does not need to be square. The board may be round, oval, triangular, hexagonal…any shape that works with your game, makes sense for your theme. And is still very feasible. So while you should think carefully before rejecting the traditional rectangular board for ease of production and economic reasons. It is always worth exploring other creative options. These options can add extra dimensions and appeal to your custom game design.

Many board games, and sometimes even card games, use a board in their gameplay. The board serves as a game map, point tracker, game layout, etc.
Some games prefer to have a dynamic/multifunctional game board (usually adventure/RPG), and for this they use map tiles that covered by board game tiles. This article will introduce all-in-one boards for board games and discuss fold board game board, their sizes, materials, and templates.

Types of Foldable Board Game Board

Foldable game boards used when the game board is too large to fit in a box as a whole. There are various ways to fold a game board, but there are generally three methods.

1. No Fold

It is just a piece of cardboard. Since board games generally limited in size and packaging, it recommended not to exceed 30*30CM.

2. Bi Fold Game Board

Bi-fold game boards mainly seen in classic games such as Scrabble. The boxes with these boards tend to be rectangular to contain the length of the game board when folded. It can folded horizontally or vertically.

3.Quad Fold Game Board

If your game board is square, it is best to use a quad fold game board as it will ensure that your game maintains its square size when folded.

4.Six Fold Game Board

A game board with one long side can be folded into a six-fold. A six-fold used for many current European and independent games; they are rectangular and usually very large. Their maximum size is 640×880 mm.

Board Game Board Sizes

In this component, there is a difference between large and small publishers. While large publishers can customize the size of paper they get from the paper mill, small publishers need to stick to standard sizes to keep costs down. We cover this in more depth in our How Much Does It Cost to Make a Board Game series.
Small Size: 360x390mm(14×15.3 inch) or 380x430mm (15x17inch);
Medium Size: 390x540mm(15.3×21 inch) or 430x580mm (16.9×22.8 inch);
Large Size: 480x730mm (19×28.5 inch) or 530×770mm (21.3×30.3 inch);
Extra Large:580x880mm(22.8×34.6 inch);

Material of Board Game Board

Game boards, just like chits and tiles, best made of cardboard. We recommend using 2mm thick cardboard to prevent the game board from bending out of shape. In this regard, the game board should also made of high-quality, dense cardboard to prevent it from cracking, as a lot of weight is placed on the seams during the folding and opening action. However, unlike chits and tiles which are best made with 250gsm paper, the game board is best made with 157gsm paper. As 250gsm is thicker it does not allow the game board to fold completely flat and separate easily with the two pieces joined. To ensure the thinner paper does not peel and the game board does not crack at the seams we use a new reinforced game board with fabric threads securing the two pieces of the board. Please ask us for details.
